Pánta Rhéi               Tracing the human signs in the paintings by Alessandra Dimitra
Art review by Vassiliki Athena Vayenou, Art historian

The artist’s longstanding study in the field of chromatology lends her a
strong ability of treating colour as one of the most important expressive
means of painting. Activating all of its inherent powers and qualities and
aiming at achieving her various goals and succeeding in creating a
varied scale of sensory, mental and emotional effects on the viewer.
The pervasive and combinatorial way in which she uses the deciphered
codes of colour is one of the main features of Alessandra Dimitra’s art.
Of particular interest is also the creation of the background, the space
where human experience takes place, which is usually divided into three
levels. The first level, the one closest to the viewer, is occupied by
the human figures, while the second, middle plane is characterized
by an object or an architectural element.
The third level consists of monochromatic, flat pieces: In the second
and third level the geometricality of the space’s structure is
revealed by the constantly ‘sober’ and steady movement of the brush.
In Alessandra Dimitra’s works the space possesses a kind of energy
that does not assert itself on the human figures, but gives them scope
to develop their actions.
In summary, Alessandra Dimitra’s unique stylistic expression could be
described as 'expressionistic realism’, but one that leaves room for
the experimentations of the imagination, the dream, the myth and
its symbolisms, the reciprocal connection between the real and
the transcendental, subjective and objective reality.
